How to Build Your Character ?

This lecture explains that building one’s character is not wrong, but rather something required. However, the important thing is that it must be done in a correct and spiritual way. A person may try to build himself through wrong ways such as wealth, pleasure, power, appearances, or deception. These ways do not create a true character but lead in the end to emptiness or downfall. Therefore, His Holiness Pope Shenouda III confirms that the correct path for building character is the integrated inner building of the mind, the النفس (self), the will, and the spirit.
Wrong Ways of Building the Self
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III points out that many people tried to build themselves through material or wrong ways such as pleasure, wealth, authority, betrayal, or pride. These methods may give an appearance of strength, but they do not build a true person. History and the Holy Bible present many examples of people who tried to exalt themselves in these ways, and their end was fall or failure.
Building the Mind and Knowledge
The first step in building character is building the mind. This happens through developing correct, quick, and deep understanding of matters. A person should use his mind in thinking and analysis, and train himself to solve problems and gain knowledge. Beneficial reading, deep thinking, and companionship with wise and intelligent people help a person develop his mind and expand his understanding.
Developing a Healthy Inner Self
Building character is not limited to the mind only, but also includes building the النفس (inner self). A person’s inner self should be healthy and free from fear, anxiety, doubt, and disturbance. Also, associating with people who have strong inner personalities helps a person gain courage and confidence, because psychological traits may transfer through companionship.
Strengthening the Will
One of the essential elements in building character is a strong will. A person may know what is right but cannot apply it if his will is weak. Therefore, the will must be trained through self-control, controlling thoughts, speech, and desires, and committing to principles and values even in the presence of temptations or difficulties.
Spiritual Building
The most important aspect of building character is spiritual building. This happens through spiritual means and walking in virtues, so that the spirit leads the person and triumphs over the body. Deep spiritual life gives the person inner stability and true strength in his character.
Conclusion
True character building happens when a person works on building his mind and knowledge, purifying his inner self, strengthening his will, and growing his spiritual life. When a person walks in this integrated path, he becomes a strong character, firm in principles, and able to face life with wisdom and faith.
