The lecture explains the deep relationship between preaching, teaching, and evangelism in church ministry. It emphasizes that true preaching is not merely emotional or influential words, but must be based on solid biblical and theological teaching. Preaching that combines spiritual influence with deep teaching leaves a lasting effect in people’s lives and leads them to faith and a proper spiritual life.

First: Preaching Built on Teaching

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III stresses that preaching should not be merely emotional words lacking a theological or biblical foundation. True preaching is based on sound teaching and explains the roots of Christian thought from the Holy Bible and the teachings of the Church, so that its influence remains lasting in the souls of the listeners.

Second: The Model of Teaching in the Early Church

Church teaching confirms that the Lord Christ was called the Teacher, and so were the apostles and the Fathers of the Church. They combined teaching with preaching and explained the faith while grounding it in the Holy Scriptures and theology. Therefore, they left to the Church a rich heritage of teachings, letters, and interpretations that deepen believers’ understanding of the faith.

Third: The Goals of Preaching in the Church

Preaching aims at three main matters:

  1. Establishing the correct faith and knowledge of sound doctrine.
  2. Leading people to repentance and spiritual life.
  3. Explaining the Holy Bible and clarifying what may be difficult for believers to understand.

Fourth: Types of Preaching

There are several types of preaching, including:

  • Preaching based on a biblical verse or passage.
  • Topical preaching that discusses subjects such as love or repentance.
  • Expository preaching that explains passages from the Holy Bible.
  • Liturgical preaching related to church readings.
  • Occasional preaching such as in feasts, funerals, and celebrations.
  • Specialized preaching for certain groups such as youth, workers, or villagers.

Fifth: Preparation for Preaching

Preaching is a gift from God, but it requires study, reading, and preparation. The preacher should combine in his sermon:

  • Verses from the Holy Bible
  • Sayings of the Fathers
  • Stories of the saints
  • Spiritual experience

Prior preparation and organizing ideas help the preacher present clear and structured teaching that benefits the listeners.

Sixth: The Purpose of True Preaching

The purpose of preaching is not to show the preacher’s knowledge or abilities, but to offer beneficial spiritual nourishment to the people. Therefore, the preacher should focus on the spiritual benefit that reaches the listeners and use the appropriate method for each group so the message may reach clearly and effectively.

Spiritual Conclusion

True preaching in the Church is a deep educational and spiritual ministry based on spiritual knowledge and the Holy Bible, aiming to build faith and lead people to a life of repentance and holiness.
