On the occasion of the Great Lent, we wish to ask the permission of the readers of (The Family Section) for a word about (Marriage and the Fasts).
Marriage and the Fasts
Marriage is joy: joy in forming a new family, in the coming of the Holy Spirit to transform two into one, and in each of the two partners finding his life companion who assists him in the exile of life.
And joy does not agree with fasting, which is suited to contrition and humility. Therefore, the Lord Christ said: “Can the sons of the bridechamber fast while the bridegroom is with them?” (Mark 2:19)…
Likewise, celebrations are suited to joyful hymns in the prayers of the rite of marriage. These joyful hymns are not permitted during fasting…
From the standpoint of food, it is practically difficult for the day of the crowning to be a day of fasting and abstinence from food, for the couple, their families, and the wedding guests…
Added to this is that marital relations are not fitting during fasting (1 Cor. 7).
For all this, the laws of the Church forbid the celebration of crowning and the prayers of the sacrament of marriage during fasting. It is not right for a person to begin his married life by breaking the laws of the Church and violating its spiritual principles…
It is not fitting that some believers pressure the clergy with all kinds of pressure and persistence, while attempting to present excuses and justifications, in order to perform the marriage rite during the period of fasting.
Every person should arrange his dates so that the time of his marriage does not coincide with a fasting period, especially this Great Fast.
