The Period of Engagement
In the past issues, we spoke about marriage, the harmony of the spouses and the difference between their ages, and about engagement. Today we continue our discussion about engagement…
The Period of Engagement – 2 –
The period of engagement is not a period of acting, in which each of the two fiancés tries to appear before the other in an ideal image that is not truly his, which is soon uncovered after marriage, and the deception appears, and the marriage is shaken…
The wise fiancé and the wise fiancée can each perceive, with wisdom and awareness, the temperament of the other, deducing it without making him feel so.
Each of the two fiancés must keep his eyes open, perceptive and aware of the importance of knowing the one who will share with him his entire life.
Among the mistakes that obscure true vision during the engagement period is the preoccupation of the two fiancés with emotional impulses that occupy the senses and the mind, so that one does not pay attention to the true nature of his fiancé.
The wise fiancé tries during this period to become acquainted with his future life partner. He studies him deeply and sees whether he can live with him throughout life in affection. He seeks to befriend him with a true and innocent friendship, without thinking of possessing him during this period.
If through the acquaintance and affection of the two fiancés they are able to become one in thought, in feelings, in temperament, and in direction, then they may become one body in marriage.
But if they are not able to attain this unity of heart, it is better that the marriage be postponed until unity is achieved, if it can indeed be achieved.
