First: The Family as a Divine Presence, Not Merely a Social Bond

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III affirms that the family is the nucleus of society, but it is not merely a union between a man and a woman; rather, it is an entity in which God is present. God is an essential member of the family, and He is the One who grants children, for “children are a heritage from the Lord.” The child is not only a son to his parents, but also a son to God in baptism. Therefore, the Christian family is built on faith that God is the source of life and blessing within it.

Second: Marriage as a Church Sacrament and Work of the Holy Spirit

Marriage in the Coptic Orthodox understanding is not only a civil or social relationship, but a church sacrament in which the Holy Spirit works, uniting the two so that they become one body. The priest blesses this union as a steward of God’s mysteries. Therefore, the Church recognizes only the church marriage that takes place before the altar with prayer and blessing.

Third: The Holiness of the Family and the Possibility of Holy Living Within It

His Holiness presented examples of holy families such as the family of Saint Basil the Great, the family of Moses the Prophet, and the family of Timothy the Apostle, to affirm that holiness is not limited to monks or celibates, but that families can exist who live in the fear of God and bring forth saints.

Fourth: The Responsibility of Spiritual Upbringing

The holy family cares for the spiritual upbringing of its children from childhood. The mother does not give her child only physical milk, but also nourishes him with the teachings, doctrines, and rites of the Church. The home should contain a prayer corner or an icon and the Holy Bible. The upbringing of children is not limited to Sunday School; rather, the primary responsibility lies upon the parents in teaching, following up, instilling virtue, and presenting a good example.

Fifth: Balance Between Obedience and Freedom

The obedience of children should be “in the Lord,” and parents should not pressure their children in a way that causes inner conflict, especially in matters such as consecration or marriage. The holy family does not place the son in conflict between God’s commandment and parental orders, but guides him with love and wisdom without compulsion.

Sixth: Wisdom in Managing Family Finances

His Holiness addressed the importance of cooperation within the family in financial matters. The father should not be pressured if his income is limited; rather, everyone should cooperate wisely in management. He also pointed to the importance of rational spending, cooperation between spouses, and even vocational training for children to benefit their household. He emphasized responsible thinking regarding family planning according to capabilities, so that the family does not live in constant hardship.

The General Message

The Christian family is a small church in which God dwells, the Holy Spirit works, and a holy generation is raised in the fear of God. It is a shared responsibility based on faith, love, wisdom, and spiritual and material cooperation.
