The Comforting Soul

The Main Idea of the Lecture

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III speaks about the “comforting soul” that grants comfort and peace to those around it, in contrast to the tiring soul that causes anxiety and distress. The comforting soul is like a calm fragrant breeze, while the tiring soul is like a storm that disturbs the atmosphere. He poses the question to every person: Are you a source of comfort to those around you or a cause of fatigue for them?

🔹 Practical Examples of the Comforting Soul

The first image of the comforting soul that a person experiences is the embrace of the mother, where there is security, tenderness, and reassurance. Calm features and a sincere smile plant peace in the hearts of others, whether children or adults. Likewise, in different areas of life: the doctor, the father of confession, the manager, and the teacher all need a comforting spirit that spreads hope and lightens people’s burdens.

🔹 Characteristics of the Comforting Soul

• Far from harshness in words, judgments, and dealings.
• Does not cause gloom to others nor magnify small matters.
• Cheerful, gentle, and conveys news in a calm and gradual manner.
• Far from anger and quick temper.
• Does not think evil, but deals with trust and love, as mentioned in First Corinthians 13 about love that does not think evil.
• Respects the privacy of others and does not interfere in what does not concern it.
• Does not insist in an annoying way nor pressure others but gives them opportunity.
• Avoids futile argument and imposing opinions.

🔹 The Spiritual and Faith Dimension

The comforting soul reflects the true Christian spirit of love that builds and does not destroy, encourages and does not break. It is a soul sensitive to the needs of others, seeking their comfort even without being asked. It resembles what was said about the Lord Christ that He “went about doing good,” and His presence was a blessing and comfort to all.

The comforting soul, therefore, is a broad-hearted and long-suffering soul that spreads peace and becomes a cause of consolation and joy to everyone who approaches it. It is a call for every Coptic Orthodox believer to walk in the spirit of meekness and gentleness to be light and comfort in his surroundings.
