Against You Alone Have I Sinned

This lecture emphasizes that every sin is essentially directed against God Himself, even if it appears to be against people or circumstances. Sin is rebellion against God, separation from Him, and rejection of communion with Him, because it expresses lack of love for God and preference of the world over Him.

Spiritual and Faith Dimension

  • Sin is not merely a wrong action, but an inner attitude of the heart, marked by pride and lack of faith that God is present and sees everything.
  • The sinner acts as if saying to God: I do not want Your communion, thus rejecting the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and defiling the temple of God, which is his body.
  • Holy Scripture teaches that love of the world is enmity with God, and that not placing God before one’s eyes is the root of falling into sin.

Sin and Reconciliation

  • Because sin is directed against the unlimited God, it is an unlimited sin and requires an unlimited atonement; therefore, the Incarnation and Redemption were a divine necessity.
  • In the Old Testament, the burnt offering symbolized reconciliation with God, because sin is hostility toward Him and requires reconciliation.
  • In the New Testament, we are called to be reconciled with God, for this reconciliation precedes any reconciliation with people.

Living Before God

  • The spiritual remedy is for a person to set God before him at all times—in thoughts, actions, prayer, and service.
  • The constant awareness of standing before God produces holy reverence, prevents pride, and leads to humility and contrition.
  • Whoever lives before God does not sin without fear, but walks in God’s light, aware that he is exposed before Him inwardly and outwardly.
