 Main Idea

This lecture explains the meaning of the final petition in the Lord’s Prayer: “Do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one”, as a deep expression of humility, total dependence on God, and awareness of human weakness before sin and the power of evil.

 Humility and Weakness Before God

This petition teaches us to stand before God not only as sinners asking forgiveness for the past, but also as weak beings asking protection from falling in the future. A human being has no strength in himself to resist evil and constantly needs God’s grace and protection.

 The Reality of Human Falling

The teaching confirms that every human being is liable to fall, regardless of holiness or wisdom, as shown by the falls of Adam, David, Solomon, Samson, and Peter the Apostle. Therefore, no one should be proud, but rather fear and rely on God.

 Types of Temptations

The explanation distinguishes between:

  • Temptations from God: meant for testing, for good, within human capacity, and always accompanied by a way out.
  • Temptations from the evil one: meant to cause falling and destruction, harsh in nature, and attempting to close all exits.

 Meaning of “the Evil One”

The term the evil one may refer to:

  • Satan himself,
  • His helpers among evil people or false brethren,
  • Or the evil dwelling inside the human heart, thoughts, desires, and body.

️ Human Role with Grace

Prayer does not mean laziness or neglect. It requires watchfulness, vigilance, fleeing from the causes of sin, resisting the evil one, and engaging in spiritual struggle. God works to save us, and we cooperate with Him through obedience and wisdom.

 Spiritual Conclusion

The petition “Do not lead us into temptation” means that temptations remain outside the heart and mind and do not enter to destroy the person, with God acting as a guardian over them. “Deliver us from the evil one” is a continuous cry for protection from everything that separates the human being from God.
