What Is Life?

True life is not merely physical existence or the satisfaction of desires, but a deep spiritual life manifested in inner freedom, growth in goodness, union with God, and preparation for eternal life.
First: The False Concept of Life
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that many people think life is absolute freedom or bodily pleasure, and thus they live in boredom and emptiness. This understanding leads to inner fatigue, because pleasure is temporary and does not satisfy the spirit, and absolute freedom does not exist since it may harm the person, others, and society.
Second: True Freedom
True freedom is liberation from within: from sin, bad habits, and desires that enslave the soul. Whoever is liberated internally can use external freedom in a sound way that does not harm himself or others, within God’s commandments, values, and public order.
Third: The Difference Between Pleasure and Happiness
Pleasure is connected to the senses and matter and quickly fades, often followed by emptiness and boredom. True happiness rises above the level of the senses, satisfies the spirit, and grants peace, stability, and continuous growth in goodness.
Fourth: The Danger of the Desires of the Soul
Even the desires of the soul—such as glory, authority, wealth, and fame—do not satisfy, but pursue the person endlessly and make him weary. Whoever walks behind the “ego” lives in constant struggle and does not find true fulfillment.
Fifth: True Life
True life is the life of the spirit, in which a person lives in God and abides in Him, becoming a temple of the Holy Spirit. Life is not merely years on earth, but preparation for eternal life, victory over the self, inner purity, and partnership with God in will and work.
Sixth: The Measure of Life
Life is not only the heartbeat or the flow of blood, but a spiritual depth higher than body, soul, and matter. When God lives in a person and the person lives in God, this is true life.
