His Holiness Pope Shenouda III speaks about kindness as one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit, explaining that it is not merely a social behavior or human politeness, but a deep spiritual virtue that flows from the work of the Holy Spirit in a person and reflects the very nature of God in His dealings with humanity.

Kindness as a Divine Attribute

Kindness is God’s way of dealing with human beings, through which He leads them gently to repentance. He does not repay people according to their sins but deals patiently with their weakness. Salvation itself is the greatest expression of God’s kindness, as He bore our sins and died for us out of love and mercy.

Kindness in the Life of the Believer

His Holiness emphasizes that Christian life is not measured by prayer and fasting alone, but by the manifestation of the fruits of the Spirit in one’s conduct, foremost among them kindness. A person who lacks kindness, no matter how religious he appears, does not reflect the spirit of Christ.

Characteristics of a Kind Person

A kind person is marked by gentleness, tenderness, cheerfulness, and distance from violence and harshness. He does not raise his voice or use hurtful words. Even when correction is needed, it is offered calmly and with love.

Biblical Examples of Kindness

His Holiness presents many biblical examples, such as God’s treatment of the prodigal son, Christ’s dealings with Peter after his denial, the Samaritan woman, Zacchaeus the tax collector, and the sinful woman. In all these encounters, kindness was the means that drew souls to repentance and salvation.

Kindness Toward the Weak

Kindness does not despise the weak or judge them, but encourages the faint-hearted, supports the struggling, and gives them time to grow. God Himself accepts even little fruit and counts it as a blessing, dealing gently with those who have not yet reached maturity.

Kindness as the Path to Winning Souls

His Holiness concludes by affirming that kindness wins hearts and draws people to God, while harshness destroys relationships and closes the door of repentance. Kindness is the practical path through which we gain others for Christ.
