The negative from a doctrinal point of view

The lecture explains the meaning and importance of the Agpeya as a complete school of prayer that organizes a person’s relationship with God throughout the day and night and connects the believer to salvation events and the Word of God.

🌿 Spiritual and Educational Dimension

  • His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that the word “Agpeya” means “the hours,” referring to the seven canonical prayers: Prime, Third, Sixth, Ninth, Vespers, Compline, and Midnight.

  • The lecture emphasizes that praying the Agpeya prolongs one’s time in the presence of God and provides rich spiritual material instead of brief and shallow prayer.

  • It shows that the Agpeya teaches all kinds of prayer: thanksgiving, contrition, confession, supplication, glorification, praise, and contemplation of God’s attributes.

  • It clarifies that praying the Psalms guarantees harmony with God’s will, since they are divinely inspired words spoken by the Holy Spirit.

  • The Agpeya trains the believer in reverent and proper dialogue with God.

  • It helps the believer avoid passing three hours without remembering God, keeping the heart connected to Him throughout the day.

  • The hours are linked to sacred events: the Incarnation, the descent of the Holy Spirit, the Crucifixion, redemption, and the Second Coming.

  • The Agpeya includes a strong instructional and exhortative element through the Psalms, epistles, and Gospel readings, offering a daily spiritual plan for Christian conduct.

  • It represents a communal prayer that unites the entire Church with one spirit and one supplication everywhere.

  • The lecture concludes that the Agpeya is a true school of prayer that teaches a person how to pray and enriches spiritual life with details that one could not remember alone.
