The Priest, Discipline, and Personal Status

Pastoral The Priest, Discipline, and Personal Status
General Idea of the Lecture
This lecture addresses the concept of church discipline and the priest’s role in exercising it, explaining its spiritual and canonical dimensions, then moves to personal status issues, especially the impediments to marriage and the invalidity of marriage according to Coptic Orthodox teaching.
First: Discipline in Pastoral Care
- Discipline is exercised by divine authority granted to the Church in binding and loosing, not as a human or retaliatory act.
- The primary purpose of discipline is twofold: to preserve the holiness of the Church and to reform the sinner and lead him to repentance.
- Discipline does not contradict God’s love, because God’s love is inseparable from His justice and holiness.
- The Holy Scripture, in both the Old and New Testaments, shows that God disciplines for the benefit and salvation of humanity.
Second: The Variety of Discipline and Its Controls
- Discipline is not of one type but varies according to the nature of the sin and the person who committed it.
- It is not permissible to impose more than one punishment for a single sin, except in cases of heresy.
- Discipline must be specific and clear in its type and duration, not vague or undefined.
- The duration of discipline is linked to repentance; persistence in sin means persistence of discipline.
Third: Discipline Concerning the Clergy
- Clergy members are subject to discipline just as lay people are, without favoritism.
- Discipline may include partial suspension, deprivation from a specific sacrament, general suspension from ministry, or complete deposition.
- No discipline is imposed without examination and justice, unless the sin is clear and public.
- A priest must be balanced, not quick-tempered, well-versed in doctrine, and his judgment must arise from a spirit of fatherhood, not harshness.
Fourth: Personal Status – Impediments to Marriage
- Impediments to marriage are the same reasons that render a marriage invalid, and the priest must carefully verify them.
- Causes of invalidity include:
- A previous bond not dissolved ecclesiastically.
- Marriage after a civil divorce not recognized by the Church.
- Physical or mental incapacity.
- Coercion or threat.
- Deceit in an essential matter.
- Serious illnesses existing before marriage.
- Lack of maturity.
- Forbidden degrees of kinship.
- Difference of religion or denomination.
Spiritual Conclusion
Discipline in the Church is a spiritual remedy administered with wisdom, aiming at the salvation of the soul and the preservation of the holiness of the ecclesial body, within a framework of justice, love, and pastoral responsibility.
