Biblical Terms – Water

⬇️ تحميل الفيديو

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III speaks about the symbolism of water in the Holy Scripture, and how it represents life, renewal, and purification, using many biblical passages that reveal these deep spiritual meanings.

💧 1. Water as a Symbol of Life

  • Every living being needs water; therefore Scripture uses it as a symbol of spiritual life.

  • Scripture describes the righteous person as a tree planted by streams of water, meaning firm and fruitful through divine grace.

💧 2. God and Christ as the Source of Living Water

  • God declares in Jeremiah that He is “the fountain of living water.”

  • Christ, in His conversation with the Samaritan woman, confirms that the water He gives grants unending life, referring to the Holy Spirit.

💧 3. Fresh Water and Salt Water as Spiritual Symbols

  • Rivers symbolize fresh water, meaning the grace of God and the work of the apostles who carry life to people.

  • Seas and many waters sometimes symbolize evil, disturbance, and the pride of the world.

💧 4. Water and Renewal in the New Life

  • The new birth happens “of water and the Spirit.”

  • Water symbolizes the new life given by the Holy Spirit.

💧 5. Water as a Symbol of Purification

  • Christ washed the disciples’ feet as a sign of spiritual cleansing.

  • In Ezekiel it is written: “I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and you shall be clean.”

  • This appears also in the Church’s rites: the Lakkan, blessing water, and sprinkling water on the faithful.

🌿 The Spiritual Essence

Water is not just a physical element; it is a sign of divine life, purification, and renewal. Through it, the believer understands that his life flows from God alone, and that the Holy Spirit is the One who pours into the heart, turning it into a spring of holy life, firm in faith.
