Wills that are not yours

The lecture focuses on an important spiritual principle: not every commandment in the Bible is directed to every person, for God gives general commandments to all, and others are specific to certain individuals, groups, or servants. His Holiness emphasizes that misunderstanding the commandments can lead to spiritual confusion, pride, and practicing roles that do not belong to a person, which causes disorder in the Church.

First: Distinguishing between general and specific commandments

His Holiness explains that the Bible contains commandments for faith and holy living that apply to everyone, while other commandments are given to apostles, priests, or spiritual leaders. Therefore, one must not apply to oneself a commandment that is not directed to him.

Second: Examples of commandments not for everyone

  • The commandment of St. Paul: “Woe to me if I do not preach,” was because he was entrusted with a special mission, and it is not for all believers.

  • The commandments addressed to kings or judges in the Old Testament do not apply to ordinary people.

  • The words Christ spoke to the apostles such as “Do not call anyone father… or teacher,” were for the apostolic leadership, not for all the people.

Third: The danger of applying texts without discernment

His Holiness warns that some may misuse verses not meant for them and act as judges, teachers, or preachers without being sent, causing confusion and conflict. He explains how some individuals in history misused verses to justify actions without legitimate authority or true calling.

Fourth: Working within the limits God gives

God distributes gifts and roles within the Church: apostles, prophets, teachers, shepherds… and not all have the same responsibilities. Therefore, each person must know his place and apply only the commandments meant for him, without elevating himself above what is proper.

Fifth: The need to understand the Bible in its spirit, not merely its letter

His Holiness points out that the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. One must understand verses according to their context, the people they were said to, and their role in the Church. Proper spiritual understanding prevents judging others and prevents a person from claiming what does not belong to him.

Sixth: Humility as the foundation of correct interpretation

The humble heart knows its boundaries and does not attempt to take the place of apostles, leaders, or judges, but walks as God desires. Humility keeps a person within what is his without crossing into what is not his, living in spiritual peace and correct understanding of the commandment.
