Spirits – Reincarnation Part 1

The lecture strongly criticizes the concept of reincarnation and all related ideas such as the etheric body, ectoplasm, the double, spirit-summoning, or using hypnosis to explore “past lives.” His Holiness Pope Shenouda III affirms that these ideas have no scientific, biblical, or theological foundation, but rely on observations, imagination, and illogical narratives.
1. Rejection of foreign spiritual concepts
His Holiness rejects the idea of an etheric human, a double, or ectoplasm, because they have no scientific or spiritual basis. He explains that some writers mix scientific terms with theology in distorted ways.
2. The danger of inserting reincarnation into Christian faith
He warns that books promoting reincarnation are not pure science and attempt to interpret everything through the lens of spirits. He stresses that the idea of multiple spirits within one person contradicts Scripture and faith.
3. Gifted children are not proof of reincarnation
He refutes the claim that child prodigies carry the souls of previous persons. He explains that talent may be due to inheritance or divine gift, not the presence of another soul.
4. Refuting biological explanations linked to spirits
He rejects using reincarnation to explain matters like medical gender changes or aggressive behavior, affirming these have biological, psychological, and social causes.
5. Invalidity of human spirits entering animals
He explains that a rational human spirit entering an animal would make it a rational being, which is impossible. Such ideas show superficial thinking.
6. Misuse of Scripture and patristic texts
He objects to using biblical verses outside their context to support reincarnation and corrects misinterpretations related to various Church Fathers.
7. Deception of “past-life memories” through hypnosis
He clarifies that what is called retrieving past lives through hypnosis is an illusion or the influence of misleading spirits. He reminds of the biblical command: “Test the spirits.”
Spiritual conclusion
The lecture affirms that a human being has one soul and one body, and after death the soul goes to God and does not return to new bodies. It is a call to remain firm in faith and avoid foreign teachings that lead away from Scripture and the Orthodox Coptic understanding.
