His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that the principle “Watch yourself and the teaching and persist in that” is a fundamental rule for the servant before and after entering ministry, because it is the way of the soul’s salvation and a protection for the Church and the people.

Main idea

What matters is that the servant does not lose himself in the tasks of ministry; it is not enough to have knowledge or position — you must always watch your heart and your spiritual life. The self is more important than any outward work.

The importance of self-observation

The servant must examine himself: advancement in ministry or promotion to ranks does not necessarily mean spiritual progress. Many are occupied by responsibilities and their spiritual life weakens.

Teaching that accompanies observation

Teaching must be orthodox and sound, rich and beneficial for salvation, not a theoretical teaching that strips the heart of life. Preparing lessons and preparing the self with prayer are necessary so that teaching is alive.

Dangers of immersion in ministry

Being occupied with appeals, politics, meetings, or the pursuit of dignity and authority empties ministry of its spirit and makes the servant a fixed sign rather than a living example. Also the desire for display or pride or love of material things leads the servant into sins.

Biblical examples and warnings

Saints and kings who fell while in ministry (David, Solomon, and others) are mentioned by His Holiness to emphasize that ministry is not a guarantee of salvation but requires constant vigilance.

Practical directions

  • Watch your heart daily: in thought, word, deed, and dealings.

  • Make prayer, meditation, and reading first, and do not sacrifice your spirituality for ministry.

  • Prepare your lessons and blend them with prayer and respect the mystery of the place.

  • Do not busy yourself with judging others; care for your own spiritual growth.

Spiritual conclusion

Christ sanctified Himself for us so that we might be sanctified; so be filled so that you may overflow. True ministry springs from a pure heart and love for people, so that your life becomes an example and people are led to salvation more than merely by your teaching.
