The Qualities of the Successful and Beloved Priest – A Sermon Delivered during a Meeting with the Priests of Mallawi at the House of the Martyr Arianus, Abu Talat

The successful priest is a living icon of Christ among his people, carrying a word of comfort and a spiritual voice that lifts hearts toward heaven. He is a good teacher who nourishes his children with sound doctrine, guides them in confession, and grants them inner peace. A beloved priest does not live for himself, but fills the church with constant spiritual activity, so that people feel new life flowing through his service.
He is a true spiritual role model whose life inspires others, and whose simple and holy behavior speaks louder than many sermons. He enters the struggles of his people with love, visiting them and making them feel he is part of their family, not just an official in the church. The true priest is a man of prayer; his prayers are answered because of his sincere and trusting relationship with God.
For him, visitation is not a social call but bringing God into the home and leaving divine grace that transforms hearts. He knows he is accountable before God for the lost and the absent, striving “to save some by all means,” and showing no favoritism. He is faithful in giving, knowing that God blesses those who give, using what he has for service rather than self.
Thus the priest becomes a good shepherd who seeks the lost, heals the broken, binds up the wounded, and leads all into God’s embrace with peace and humility.
