The Fast of the Apostles

From the Events of History
The Fast of the Apostles
The Oldest Fast of the Church
There is no doubt that the Fast of the Apostles was the first and oldest fast in the Christian Church.
The Lord Christ prophesied about it when He said: “When the Bridegroom is taken away from them, then they will fast” (Mark 2:20). And the apostles actually fasted, and the mention of this fast is recorded in the Holy Bible.
This fast has beautiful memories.
In it the Holy Spirit spoke to the disciples, and in it He chose Barnabas and Saul for the ministry. Thus the great Paul was set apart for ministry during the Fast of the Apostles. Concerning this, the Book of Acts says: “As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Separate for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’ Then, having fasted and prayed, they laid hands on them” (Acts 13:2–3). And this fast was the beginning of the preaching ministry through which the Gospel spread to the whole world.
And since our holy apostolic fathers fasted this fast, and it was a blessed fast through which they prepared for ministry and preaching, let us also fast, seeking the blessing of this fast.
