📌 The Meaning of Salvation in the Holy Bible

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that the word salvation in the Holy Bible has several meanings, each appearing in a different context. Salvation is not a single concept, but stages and levels that all lead to God’s final salvation through redemption.

✨ First: Material Salvation

  • It is deliverance from distress or enemies, as Zechariah the priest said: “Salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us.”

  • It appears clearly in the Book of Judges when God sent saviors to deliver the people from oppression.

  • Example: the salvation accomplished through Samson.

✨ Second: Spiritual Salvation

  • This is the salvation accomplished by redemption on the Cross: salvation from eternal destruction.

  • As the scripture says: “He who believes and is baptized shall be saved,” and: “The Son of Man came to seek and to save that which was lost.”

  • Peter wrote: “Receiving the end of your faith—the salvation of your souls.”

  • Paul said: “Work out your salvation with fear and trembling,” referring to spiritual struggle.

✨ Third: Eternal Salvation

  • The final salvation at the coming of Christ, when the human person is freed from the heavy earthly body and the material world.

  • As in Philippians 3: “We await a Savior… who will transform our lowly body to be like His glorious body.”

  • This salvation raises the person into heavenly life.

✨ Fourth: Indirect Salvation

  • Although Christ is the only Savior, Scripture used the word save about others in an indirect way.

    • Example: “He who turns a sinner… saves a soul from death,” meaning he leads him to repentance.

    • Jude: “Save others with fear.”

    • Timothy: “You will save yourself and those who hear you.”

  • The meaning is not that humans save, but that they lead others toward the path that makes them worthy of God’s salvation.

✨ Salvation Through Spiritual Means

  • Faith, baptism, repentance, and the fear of God are all means that lead to salvation, but they are not salvation itself.

  • True salvation is by God alone and by redemption.

✨ Salvation from the Penalty of Sin and Salvation from Sin Itself

  • Salvation from the penalty: escaping eternal destruction.

  • Salvation from the sin itself: freedom from its power, pressure, and bondage.

  • As in the Psalms: “Save me, O God, by Your name.”

🌿 Spiritual Message

Salvation in Scripture is rich and comprehensive: beginning with material salvation, reaching its fullness in spiritual salvation, and ending with eternal salvation in glory. Through all this, the person works in repentance, faith, and spiritual striving to become worthy of Christ’s salvation, for He alone is the Savior. Salvation is a journey of growth leading the soul to freedom from sin and the world, and into the life of glory with God.
