Biblical Figures – David the Prophet, Part 4 – David’s Mistakes
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III contemplates the life of Prophet David, showing that although he was very righteous, he fell into great sins, yet his repentance was sincere and his tears were abundant, making him a model of repentance and contrition before God.
1. Human weakness and non-infallibility:
The Pope explains that despite David’s holiness, he sinned in pride, adultery, murder, and numbering the people, proving that even prophets are not infallible. Every person may fall, but the important thing is that sin is accidental, not part of his nature.
2. Divine discipline for salvation:
God did not leave David without punishment. He disciplined him through various earthly chastisements: He did not allow him to build the temple, his household was struck with troubles, his son died, and his family was torn by betrayal, adultery, and murder. Yet these punishments were acts of divine love meant to purify his soul, for “the Lord disciplines those He loves.”
3. David’s tears and repentance:
David’s tears were near and his heart was tender; he wept for his enemies, his sons, and his sins. From his tears came the Psalms, a school of repentance and broken-heartedness, such as: “Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy… Deliver me from blood, O God of my salvation.”
4. The sensitive heart before God:
The Pope emphasizes that God is close to the contrite heart and true tears, while He resists the hard heart that feels no remorse. David’s tears overcame divine anger, making him a beloved model of repentance.
5. Balance between God’s love and His fear:
At the end, the Pope clarifies that God’s love does not cancel His justice. Man must live between love and holy fear, for fear is “the beginning of the way,” guarding the soul from carelessness and disregard.
Spiritual message:
Repentance is not weakness but spiritual strength; divine discipline is a sign of love; and tears are the language of the heart before God. The righteous may fall, but holiness lies in rising quickly through pure repentance and sincere tears.
