Biblical Figures – David the Prophet, Part 2 – Goliath and the Struggle with Saul
The sermon by His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explores the journey of David the Prophet—from his victory over Goliath to his complex relationship with King Saul—highlighting David’s faith, humility, and nobility despite persecution.
1. Faith over Human Strength:
Pope Shenouda emphasized that David’s triumph over Goliath was not through weapons but through the power of God’s name, declaring, “The battle is the Lord’s.” This teaches believers to rely on God, not on human means.
2. Jealousy Destroys Love:
After David’s victory, Saul’s jealousy grew when people sang, “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.” The Pope noted that jealousy corrupts love and turns hearts away from God’s grace.
3. David’s Nobility and Humility:
Though Saul sought to kill him, David refused to harm “the Lord’s anointed.” True strength, the Pope taught, lies not in revenge but in self-control and respect for God’s will.
4. Training through Suffering:
God allowed David to experience hardship and persecution to strengthen his faith and prepare him for kingship. Trials, therefore, are tools of divine training, not signs of rejection.
5. Nobility Conquers Cruelty:
When David spared Saul’s life twice, Saul wept and said, “You are more righteous than I.” This shows how true nobility can soften hardened hearts and reveal the weakness of evil before goodness.
Spiritual Message:
True victory comes not from power or appearance but from faith, humility, and respect for God’s plan. David exemplifies the believer who fights his battles in the Lord’s name—and always wins through Him.
