Biblical Figures – Elisha the Prophet

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that the prophets and saints in the Bible differed in temperament: some were gentle and others were firm, yet both were accepted before God. God uses the meek as well as the strong in His service.

The calling and divine choice of Elisha

God chose Elisha to continue Elijah’s mission, saying, “Anoint Elisha son of Shaphat as prophet in your place.” He was called symbolically when Elijah cast his mantle upon him — a sign of divine appointment. Elisha acted wisely, not impulsively: he bid farewell to his parents, offered a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the poor, and then followed Elijah.

Elisha’s discipleship and spiritual humility

Elisha did not begin ministry immediately but spent time serving Elijah, learning obedience and humility. When Elijah was taken up to heaven in a fiery chariot, Elisha insisted, “As the Lord lives and as your soul lives, I will not leave you,” desiring to receive a blessing.

The fiery chariot and its spiritual meaning

Pope Shenouda explained that the fiery chariot was not physical fire but a vision of angels appearing as a chariot of fire, as later seen in Dothan when Elisha’s servant saw the mountain filled with horses and chariots of fire around the prophet.

The spirit of Elijah resting on Elisha

When Elijah ascended, Elisha asked for “a double portion of your spirit upon me,” meaning double the spiritual power. When Elijah’s mantle fell, Elisha struck the Jordan River with it and it parted — a sign that Elijah’s spirit and power now rested on him.

Miracles of Elisha

Elisha performed many miracles: multiplying oil for the widow, blessing bread to feed a hundred men, raising the Shunammite’s son, healing Naaman the leper, and even reviving a dead man after his own death when his bones were touched. These acts revealed his faith and divine power.

The Shunammite woman’s example

His Holiness admired the Shunammite woman’s faith and strength. She hosted the prophet, trusted in God during her son’s death, and was steadfast in her belief until Elisha raised him. She stands as a model of practical faith and endurance.

Spiritual lesson from Elisha’s life

Spiritual growth requires obedience and discipleship before leadership. True faith is shown in trust and steadfastness amid hardship. Elisha is an example of a humble yet powerful servant, filled with divine spirit, acting boldly through faith that God works in him.
