Biblical Terms – Light

⬇️ تحميل الفيديو

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains in this lecture that “light” in the Holy Bible has several meanings—some physical and some spiritual—all of which reveal God’s presence and work in human life.

1. Physical Light:
This is the light God created on the first day when He said, “Let there be light.” It separates light from darkness, representing the difference between life and nonexistence.

2. Spiritual Light:
This refers to the Word of God and His commandments that illuminate man’s path, as in the Psalm: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” This is mental and spiritual light that guides a person toward righteousness.

3. Light in People:
Some people became sources of light to the world, like the saints and the disciples, to whom Christ said, “You are the light of the world.” This is why lights are placed before their icons, remembering that they shone with good works and faith.

4. The True Divine Light:
God Himself is “the true Light.” Jesus said, “I am the light of the world; whoever follows Me shall not walk in darkness.” Christ distinguishes between the true light from God and the reflected light, as the moon reflects the sun’s light—God alone is the source of real light.

5. Light as a Symbol of Truth and Openness:
Light also symbolizes openness and truth, while darkness symbolizes secrecy and evil. The righteous live in the light because their deeds are good, but the wicked hide in darkness, not wanting their actions exposed.

Spiritual Message:
The Pope calls believers to live in divine light—that is, in truth and holiness—and to become lights to the world, reflecting God’s glory. For God is the true Light, and by His light, we see light. Whoever walks in Him will not fear the darkness of sin or separation from God.
