In this historic national address, His Holiness Pope Shenouda III speaks about national unity between Muslims and Christians in Egypt, and the Church’s stance toward terrorism and wars. He calls for peace, love, and wisdom in facing global challenges.
His message combines deep faith with patriotism, affirming that belief in one God unites people to serve Egypt and the world together.

1. Words of gratitude and respect

The Pope begins by thanking the religious and civil leaders present—especially Sheikh Tantawi, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar—and the journalists and thinkers who work to strengthen national unity and enlightened thought.

2. Egypt’s steadfastness amid crises

He notes that while wars rage around the world, Egypt remains secure and wise in its stance.
He lists national achievements such as the Mubarak Peace Bridge, the revival of the Alexandria Library, and the discovery of new oil wells, seeing in these events signs of Egypt’s strength amid turmoil.

3. Support for Arab and Palestinian causes

The Pope expresses joy over the promise to establish an independent Palestinian state, hoping it will be serious and just.
He congratulates Syria for its seat on the UN Security Council and highlights the Arab world’s unity, particularly on the Palestinian cause.

4. National unity in Egypt

He stresses that Egyptians are one people in every national struggle:

  • They fought side by side in the Crusades.

  • Resisted British occupation together.

  • Won the October War united in heart.

  • Stand together now against terrorism.

He recalls his deep friendship with Sheikh Al-Azhar as a symbol of Egypt’s interfaith harmony.

5. Egypt’s stance on global terrorism

The Pope praises President Hosni Mubarak for his courageous, independent, and wise position against terrorism, emphasizing that no religion approves of it.
He warns that terrorism destroys lives, economies, and peace of mind, and that killing innocents can never be justified by faith.

6. Human and spiritual dimension

The Pope condemns the tragic events of September, describing them as heinous crimes that no religion accepts.
He warns against associating Islam with terrorism, affirming that Islam is a religion of peace, and those who commit violence in its name distort its image.

7. Difference between war and terrorism

The Pope explains that war is an open conflict between known enemies, while terrorism is treacherous and hidden, targeting innocents without warning.
War has laws and timing; terrorism has no legitimacy or morality.

8. Methods for confronting extremism

He calls for a comprehensive response including:

  1. Religious and educational awareness in schools, universities, and places of worship.

  2. Responsible journalism and media to prevent misinformation and panic.

  3. Security cooperation to protect institutions.

  4. National and interfaith conferences to promote human values and unity.

He warns against denial or fear, insisting that the response must be intellectual, spiritual, and practical.

9. Spiritual conclusion

The Pope concludes by thanking all institutions involved, praying that love and wisdom prevail in Egypt, saying:

“We are a society that loves one another, and if ignorance appears, it must be treated with wisdom and calm.”

His message: True faith is lived through love, wisdom, and the unity of the nation.
