Biblical Criticism – Is the Holy Bible the Word of God?

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that the Holy Bible is truly the Word of God, written under divine inspiration, yet it contains different types of divine speech — some spoken directly by God, some through prophets, and some as inspired historical accounts.
1. Types of Divine Speech in the Bible:
-
Direct Words from God — such as the Ten Commandments or the sayings of Christ.
-
Words Spoken Through Prophets — where the prophets spoke under the guidance of the Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:21).
-
Historical Narratives — inspired writings that record God’s works in human history.
2. The Bible’s Comprehensive Nature:
The Bible is not only God’s spoken word but also a record of His actions.
It contains:
-
Commandments and divine teachings.
-
Prophecies about the Messiah and salvation.
-
Historical accounts that reveal God’s dealings with humanity.
Without these, we could not understand God’s plan of redemption.
3. The Connection Between Revelation and History:
The inclusion of creation, the lives of prophets, and the story of God’s people is essential for understanding how God revealed Himself.
Without the historical framework, divine revelation would be incomplete.
4. Examples from Psalms and Proverbs:
“Psalms of David” and “Proverbs of Solomon” are not human words but divinely inspired expressions.
The prophets wrote as moved by the Holy Spirit, expressing God’s truth through their own style, yet under His full guidance.
5. The Unity of the Bible:
Though written by many people over centuries, the Bible maintains a perfect unity of message and spirit, proving that its real Author is God Himself.
Faith Message:
The Bible is the living Word of God, inspired by the Holy Spirit, written through chosen people to reveal God’s truth and love.
Its variety of expression — commandments, history, and prophecy — all flow from one divine source.
