Biblical Criticism – The Meaning of “Jesus Shall Reign Over the House of Jacob Forever

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that the phrase “Jesus shall reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there shall be no end” (Luke 1:33) refers not to a physical or earthly kingdom, but to a spiritual and eternal one established by Christ in the hearts of believers.
The “house of Jacob” symbolizes all who believe in Christ and accept His reign in their lives.
Christ did not come to build a political or earthly kingdom but to establish the Kingdom of God within the human heart.
His reign is eternal, beyond time and place, with no end.
This kingdom is based on faith, love, and spiritual obedience, not on worldly power or authority.
Those who believe become part of the “new house of Jacob,” the universal family of faith.
Thus, the divine promise is fulfilled: Christ’s reign will never end because it is spiritual and everlasting.
The eternal reign of Christ signifies the dominion of grace in the believer’s heart and the unchanging truth of God through all ages.
