Biblical Criticism – The Errors of the Prophets

In this lecture, His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that prophets are not infallible, for complete infallibility belongs to God alone. The Bible truthfully presents the prophets as human beings with weaknesses and failings, yet chosen by God to faithfully deliver His message.
His Holiness emphasizes that human nature is weak, and divine grace is what uplifts and sustains a person.
God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong, so the prophets’ human flaws reveal the power of grace rather than diminish their holiness.
A prophet’s personal mistakes do not affect the divine message he conveys, since the message comes directly from God.
Pope Shenouda mentions examples such as Simeon and Levi’s revenge for their sister Dinah, showing that it was a human mistake driven by anger.
The Bible records such events honestly to demonstrate that even the righteous can fail, and only God is perfect.
The mention of prophets’ errors is meant to teach humility and dependence on God’s mercy, not to criticize them.
Thus, the Bible reflects a realistic faith that acknowledges human weakness while putting full hope in God’s grace and strength.
