His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains the repeated saying of Christ in Revelation: “To him who overcomes I will give…” The Christian life is a constant struggle against sin, the world, and the devil. Eternal reward belongs not to those who believe only, but to those who overcome through faith and perseverance.

🔸 1. Overcoming Is the Way to the Kingdom

Christ calls believers to victory, not passivity. Like St. Paul, the true Christian fights the good fight, keeps the faith, and awaits the crown of righteousness.

🔸 2. Christ as the Model of Victory

Christ overcame the world, the devil, and death. By uniting with Him, believers also conquer, for He said, “Without Me you can do nothing.”

🔸 3. Victory Is a Gift of Grace

The Holy Spirit gives strength to fight sin. Grace, the prayers of saints, and divine power support the struggler. The battle is the Lord’s, but man must cooperate with His grace.

🔸 4. The Call to All, Even the Weak

Even the lukewarm or fallen are invited to overcome. To the Church of Laodicea Christ said: “To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne.” Thus repentance restores hope.

🔸 5. The Seven Promises to the Overcomer

  1. To eat from the Tree of Life.

  2. Not to be hurt by the second death.

  3. To receive hidden manna and a white stone.

  4. To have authority over nations.

  5. To wear white garments and keep one’s name in the Book of Life.

  6. To become a pillar in the temple of God.

  7. To sit with Christ on His throne.

🔸 6. The Tree of Life

The Tree of Life symbolizes Christ Himself—the source of eternal life and joy in heaven.

🔸 7. The Hidden Manna

The hidden manna represents the Eucharist and God’s inner work within the soul, a secret nourishment that strengthens the believer’s spirit.

🔸 8. The Universal Call to Victory

Each person has his own struggle, yet all can overcome through divine power. Victory belongs to every faithful heart.

🔸 Spiritual Summary

“To overcome” means to live faithfully, resist sin, and remain steadfast to the end.
Those who overcome will share Christ’s glory and eternal life with Him.

“To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne.”
