Attributes of God – The Unlimited

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III in this lecture speaks about the attribute of God “the Unlimited”, explaining that this attribute distinguishes God alone in different aspects: power, knowledge, place, time, holiness, glory and wisdom. God is not confined by limits nor encompassed by place or time, and He is the first cause and the necessary being for all that else exists.
Unlimited in power and miracles
God is able to do all things, and in matters that no one else can do such as creation and raising the dead. Every power in creatures is derived from Him and He is able to give it and withdraw it. Miracles and supernatural works are not by the power of humans but by the power of God which He grants temporarily.
Unlimited in place and time
God is present everywhere: the heavens and horizons, the depths of the earth and the seas, even in people’s hearts and their thoughts. Also He is eternal without a beginning and without an end; the past, present and future are before Him together.
Unlimited in knowledge and inner sight
God’s knowledge includes hidden things: intentions, thoughts and feelings, and He knows the future before it happens. Therefore His choice of persons is based on His knowledge of their future. God sees and records everything and nothing of any creature or detail in nature is hidden from Him.
Unlimited in glory, majesty and holiness
God’s glory, magnificence and greatness cannot be described, and whoever sees God’s glory absolutely cannot live. God in His glory is above our nature but gives of His glory to the saints according to their capacity to endure.
The spiritual dimension and the call to humility and worship
Knowing that God is unlimited calls us to awe and humility before His greatness, and to continual praise and worship, because our limited mind cannot encompass His glory fully.
