The Concept of Meekness

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that meekness is a fundamental virtue in the spiritual life, one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit mentioned by the Apostle Paul. Christ Himself commanded it when He said, “Learn from Me, for I am meek and lowly in heart.”

Nature of Meekness
A meek person is calm and peaceful, slow to anger and not vengeful. He is simple, cheerful, and full of inner peace that reflects in his behavior. He lives quietly, does not interfere in others’ affairs or judge anyone, but corrects gently and calmly.

Meekness in Behavior and Speech
Meekness appears in the gentle voice and kind word, in the ability to bear others and in patience. The meek person does not complain or lose peace but lives harmoniously with God and with people.

Meekness Does Not Mean Weakness
His Holiness clarifies that meekness does not mean laziness or naivety but controlled strength. The meek can be courageous when needed, as Christ was meek yet cleansed the temple with strength when truth was at stake.

Biblical Examples of Strong Meekness
Moses was described as the meekest man on earth yet confronted the people firmly when they sinned. David was meek but bravely faced Goliath. Paul was gentle but boldly stood before rulers and kings in truth.

Meekness and Firmness Together
True meekness does not eliminate firmness but works with it in balance. A meek man or woman can speak truth with kindness, defend faith without anger, and act with courage without violence.

Divine Meekness
God Himself is the supreme example of meekness and patience, bearing sinners with love and gentleness. Thus, the Gospel calls us to be meek like Him, for “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”

Meekness as a Path of Grace and Peace
Those who live in meekness gain people’s love and God’s favor, and live in deep inner peace. It is a way to the Kingdom because it unites gentleness, humility, and holy courage.
