Behold, I Bring You Good Tidings of Great Joy

In this profound sermon, His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains the heavenly message proclaimed by the angel to the shepherds: “Behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be to all people.” He shows that this joy is not material or temporary, but the joy of salvation and reconciliation with God, the joy of freedom from sin’s bondage, and the joy of the eternal Kingdom.
Summary:
-
The Birth of Christ as the Joy of Salvation:
The Nativity is not just a celebration but a spiritual joy because “unto us is born this day a Savior.” It marks the beginning of redemption, for Christ came to save His people from their sins — not only from punishment but from sin’s dominion. -
Deliverance from Guilt and Bondage:
Many rejoice only at being forgiven, but not at being freed. True joy is when God rescues you from sin’s power through His grace and the work of the Holy Spirit within you. -
Reconciliation with God:
Christ came to restore peace between God and humanity, breaking the enmity caused by sin. On the Cross, reconciliation was achieved, and man was united again with his Creator. -
Joy of the Kingdom:
The Kingdom of God began with Christ’s birth; Satan was dethroned as “the ruler of this world.” Through the Cross and Resurrection, Christ reigned over believers’ hearts, and His Kingdom continues through faith and good works. -
Symbolism of the Magi’s Gifts:
Gold symbolizes Christ’s kingship, frankincense His priesthood, and myrrh His redemptive suffering. Likewise, believers are called to be gold (God reigning in their hearts), incense (a life of prayer), and myrrh (endurance in suffering for Christ). -
Sharing in Salvation:
It is not enough to say, “Christ saved me.” One must strive and crucify passions with Him, as St. Paul said: “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.” -
True vs. False Joy:
True joy is spiritual — in repentance, holiness, and freedom from the flesh’s slavery. Worldly joy is mere pleasure of the senses, but the joy of the Lord is deep, lasting, and heavenly. -
Joy of Service and Repentance:
Heaven rejoices over one sinner who repents. True servants rejoice in bringing back the lost sheep, carrying them on their shoulders with love and grace.
