Saint Melania the Elder – A Model of Generosity and Spiritual Humility

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III spoke about Saint Melania the Elder, who was born into a wealthy family, married, and later became a nun. She also encouraged her granddaughter, Melania the Younger, to follow the monastic life. Saint Melania did not stop at monasticism but became a spiritual guide even to senior monks.

One of the most beautiful stories from her life was her meeting with Saint Pamoah. She offered him a bag containing five hundred gold coins to be distributed among the monks in the inner desert. When he did not open the bag to count the money, she asked him why. He gently replied with deep wisdom: “If you have offered this money to God, then God knows its amount.”
These words left a deep impression on her, teaching her that true giving is done for God alone, without seeking acknowledgment or praise.

From this moment, Saint Melania learned that value lies not in quantity but in sincerity. Giving to God is not measured by number or weight but by a humble and loving heart. Her life shows how wealth can become a tool of service when used in love for God and others.

Her life remains a shining example of humility, generosity, and spiritual discipleship, guiding many souls on the path to holiness.
