The history of innovations and heresies that arose in the early ages
This lecture explains the history of early heresies in the Christian Church and how the Fathers wisely confronted them to preserve the Orthodox faith. It focuses on the Jewish-Christian heresy, the Nicolaitans, and Apollinaris, showing how false teachings distorted the truth about Christ’s divine and human nature.
📜 The First Heresy: The Judaizers (Ebionites):
The first heresy appeared during the apostolic age through the Judaizers, who sought to impose the Mosaic Law on Christians. They insisted on circumcision and Sabbath observance, denying salvation to Gentiles unless they followed the Law. St. Paul firmly opposed them, teaching that salvation comes by grace, not by the law.
📖 Their Error About Christ:
The Ebionites also denied Christ’s divinity and His virgin birth, claiming He was only a man. The Church Fathers called them “Ebionites,” meaning “the poor,” because of their spiritually poor understanding.
🔥 The Church’s Response:
The Church excommunicated them for denying the divine incarnation and Christ’s eternal pre-existence. Church Fathers like Eusebius, Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, and Jerome wrote against them, revealing their falsehood.
⛪ The Nicolaitans:
Another heresy was that of the Nicolaitans, followers of Nicholas the Deacon. Some said he personally erred, while others, such as St. Clement of Alexandria, taught that only his followers fell into sin and immorality, allowing sexual impurity and food offered to idols. The Lord condemned their teachings in the Book of Revelation.
📖 The Heresy of Apollinaris:
In the fourth century, Apollinaris, a bishop and defender of Orthodoxy, wrongly claimed that Christ had no human soul, but that the divine Word replaced it. Thus, he denied Christ’s full humanity. The Church condemned him, affirming that Christ took our whole nature to save it completely.

Pope Shenouda III reminds believers that true defense of faith must be grounded in sound doctrine and humble study. Many who fought heresy fell into new ones themselves. Therefore, Christians must hold fast to the Orthodox teaching, living it with faith and purity of heart.
