His Holiness Pope Shenouda III presents a lecture on the life and teachings of Tertullian, one of the Latin Fathers of the Church, showing his transition from a straight believer to an extremist who joined the Montanist movements. The lecture clarifies that Tertullian was a learned man with a legal and rhetorical background and wrote many practical letters and books.

Main idea
The lecture divides Tertullian’s life into two parts: a time of sound faith and a time of extremism. It highlights how his early works (books on one wife, exhortation to chastity, defense of the faith) were constructive, while his later right-wing extreme positions led to his departure from the teachings of the Church.

The spiritual and Coptic Orthodox educational dimension

  • The value of moderation: the lecture warns against religious extremism and presents the necessity of balance between holiness and compassion.

  • Chastity and asceticism: it encourages practical virtues such as chastity and spiritual austerity, emphasizing that celibacy may be preferred but is not a means to reject the mercy of the Church.

  • Repentance and forgiveness: it discusses the limits of confession and liturgical penalties, and affirms that the Church calls to repentance and that forgiveness is possible as long as there is genuine repentance.

  • The danger of extremist ideas: the lecture shows how some of Tertullian’s positions led to disputes with other Fathers and his distancing from the ecclesial community.

Practical points for pastoral care and spiritual formation

  • Teach believers the importance of balance and moderation in worship and spiritual practices.

  • Make pastors aware that liturgical penalties should be accompanied by an invitation to repentance and spiritual healing.

  • Study the Fathers’ writings with caution: benefit from the constructive parts while noting places of extremism and disagreement with the Church’s vision.

Conclusion
The lesson drawn is that the patristic heritage is rich but requires a conscious reading and attention to context; His Holiness Pope Shenouda III invites us to retain the virtues they taught (faith, chastity, order) and beware of extremism that divides rather than builds.
