In this lecture His Holiness Pope Shenouda III comments on the subject of endurance (steadfastness), teaching that endurance is the work of God in the believer’s heart and an expression of the depth of his faith and God’s love in him.

Main idea:
The lecture explains that endurance means firm steadfastness in faith and love, both in times of distress and in times of rest. Endurance is not mere passive patience but an active steadfastness and increase in the Lord’s work, supported by His promises and God’s eternal love.

Spiritual dimensions and biblical grounding:
The saint presents many biblical examples that support the idea: Job who endured affliction and returned better, Paul’s teaching about steadfastness and abundant labor, and the example of Christ who built His church on the rock as a symbol of firm faith. He also cites verses from the Song of Songs and Romans to show that God’s love is stronger than everything.

Practical models of endurance:
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III mentions biblical and historical figures: Nehemiah in rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem, Daniel in the lion’s den, the three young men in the furnace of fire, Elijah in confronting the prophets of Baal, Joseph and his steadfastness against sin, the martyr and the confessor and the church’s endurance before Roman persecution.

Reasons and means of endurance:
Endurance springs from the depth of love, depth of faith, and a heart that is not afraid. Endurance is realized by clinging to God’s promises, by prayer, by fasting, and by holding fast to the relationship with the Lord not only in distress but also in joy and rest.

Testing by time and the believer’s patience:
The lecture affirms that God may delay the answer to test our faith and love — examples of this: the captivity that lasted 70 years, and the promise of salvation that was fulfilled after thousands of years — but God is faithful and keeps His promises in the fullness of time.

Warning against breaches in faith and sin:
The speaker likens the believer to a strong ship that is not harmed by waves unless there is a hole (a weakness of faith or sin). Therefore the believer must be fortified against sin, as it is said about the Virgin “a closed garden, a sealed spring.”

Call for daily application:
The exhortation is practical and clear: we must remain in God’s love, increase in His work, strengthen our communion with the Lord in distress and rest, and prepare ourselves to stand firm before future temptations and trials. Endurance is required because God wills it of us and for His glory.

Conclusion and prayer:
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III concludes by emphasizing that endurance is a goal God asks of us and for our children and brothers in the churches, with a declaration of glory to God forever. Amen.
