Meditations on the Midnight Prayer

In this lecture His Holiness Pope Shenouda III speaks about the importance of the Midnight Prayer and calls the believers to it, clarifying that it is not exclusively for monks but for all believers.
Main idea:
The Midnight Prayer sanctifies the night and connects the believer with God through vigil, remembrance, and repentance, and it is a means of preparing for the coming of Christ and the final accounting.
The importance of night in worship:
The night has calmness and silence that help for deep worship; and the Church divided the Midnight Prayer into three watches so that a person does not deprive himself of God throughout the night.
Concern for salvation:
Those present are invited to make the salvation of the soul a constant goal, and to ask God for the grace of salvation with seriousness and spiritual struggle at midnight.
Spiritual vigilance and struggle:
The nocturnal prayer is a time for struggling against the devil’s temptations and his continuous watching, and the believer is required to keep vigil and guard himself like the shepherds who keep watch to protect their sheep.
How to stand before God in prayer:
His Holiness directs that the believer begins with humility and confession of sins, then stands with reverence and relying on God’s mercy, asking for spiritual wakefulness to understand how to pray sincerely.
Practical application and invitation:
Pope Shenouda concludes with an invitation to progress: if the believer cannot perform the three watches, let him pray one watch or even one psalm or simply speak to the Lord; the important thing is continuity and the love of being with God day and night.
The Coptic Orthodox spiritual dimension:
The lecture highlights the spirit of repentance, vigilance, and gratitude to God, and ties nocturnal worship to an authentic ecclesial tradition that emphasizes readiness for Christ’s second coming and reliance on the divine mercy through vigil, prayer, and confession.
