His Holiness Pope Shenouda III, in this sermon, speaks about meditation as a fundamental part of spiritual life, explaining that it is not mere thought or imagination but a deep gaze filled with the Spirit that opens the mind and heart to receive divine knowledge.

What is meditation?

  • Meditation is a thought deeper than ordinary thought, beyond the senses, elevating the person to the level of the spirit.

  • It can be a gift from God or the fruit of constant spiritual training that enables one to see God in everything.

  • Meditation is not an escape from reality but a deep understanding of God’s presence in everyday life.

Types of meditation

  1. Intellectual meditation: thinking about God’s greatness and power through nature and creation.

  2. Spiritual meditation: the union of the soul with the Holy Spirit, extracting heavenly meanings from material things.

  3. Faithful meditation: leading one to trust in God’s care even through simple things like the lilies of the field and the ravens of the sky.

Fruits of meditation

  • Meditation purifies the mind and deepens faith, making one see God’s hand in everything.

  • It opens the mind to the meanings of Scripture and transforms reading into a living spiritual experience.

  • It grants inner peace by connecting the soul with God at every moment.

Meditation in daily life

  • A person can meditate while praying, reading, walking, or observing nature.

  • Even hardships and trials can become sources of learning and meditation, like fire that welds metal to strengthen it.

  • The spiritual person finds divine lessons in every event, even in pain or darkness.

How to practice meditation

  • Read the Bible deeply, not superficially, asking: What does this verse mean for me?

  • Turn what you see into a message from God; the raven becomes an example of divine care, and light a symbol of the Holy Spirit’s work in the soul.

  • Strive to extract spirit from matter and heavenly meaning from daily experiences.

Conclusion
His Holiness calls believers to live a meditative life where thought becomes prayer, sight becomes worship, and the mind becomes an instrument of grace. Meditation is the path to union with God, the source of faith’s depth, and the spiritual school that lifts the soul from earth to heaven.
