The Human Energies

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III speaks about the hidden energies within man, explaining that every person carries within him several powers: the mind, spirit, soul, conscience, will, and talents. He affirms that the difference among people lies in how much they use and develop these powers.
The greatness of human capacities
He explains that God gave humans a mind capable of invention and discovery, reaching space and creating amazing technologies. These powers are not against faith but are gifts from God the Creator, who gave humans their intelligence and ability.
Developing talents and abilities
He calls on every person to develop the mind through thinking and learning, and to strengthen intelligence, memory, and analytical ability. He also urges the training of the conscience to be pure and precise, since it can grow or weaken according to knowledge and education.
The importance of self-control and will
He emphasizes that God gave humans free will, and each person must strengthen it through fasting and spiritual discipline, learning to control their thoughts, speech, and emotions. A strong person is one who rules over himself and acts with wisdom and balance.
Harmony of human energies
He teaches that a sound person is one whose powers work together in harmony, without inner conflict between mind and desires, living in balance and justice. Those controlled by emotions, environment, or attachments lose this balance.
Spiritual conclusion
He concludes that the complete human being is one who uses all his powers rightly according to God’s will — a wise person with spiritual vision who sees clearly and lives a balanced, integrated life in body, mind, and spirit.
