Faith and Works – Differences with Protestants
1. Meaning and Importance of Faith
His Holiness Pope Shenouda explains that faith is the foundation of salvation, and no one can be saved without faith, as the Bible says, “The righteous shall live by faith.” Yet, faith is not mere belief or words, but a living and fruitful faith shown through obedience and a godly life.
2. Living Faith vs. Dead Faith
True faith is not intellectual acknowledgment but a practical, active faith that produces good works. The real faith is the one “working through love,” because love is the essence and fruit of faith.
3. The Relationship between Faith and Works
The apostles first preached faith to non-believers, then taught about works after faith was established. Faith is the beginning; works are its fruit and proof. “Faith without works is dead”—works complete and express faith.
4. Types of Works
-
Works of the Law (circumcision, sacrifices) are rejected—they cannot save.
-
Works without Faith are ineffective for justification.
-
Human Works of Pride (like the Pharisee’s boasting) are void.
-
Works of the Holy Spirit in the sacraments—baptism, chrism, repentance—are divine.
-
Works in Partnership with God—service, prayer, repentance—done through cooperation with the Holy Spirit.
5. Works as the Fruit of Faith
Works are proof of new birth; whoever does righteousness is born of God. The ungodly, by contrast, are known by their evil deeds. Judgment will be based on deeds, for the Lord “will reward each according to his works.”
6. Love as the Core of Faith
Love gives value to faith—“without love, I am nothing.” Every good work must spring from love for God and others.
7. Christian Conduct
Walking according to the Spirit reflects true faith, for Christian life as a whole is faith expressed in love, humility, and obedience.
Conclusion:
Faith and works are inseparable: faith is the root, and works are the fruit. Whoever truly believes in Christ lives His commandments and bears good fruit, for fruitless faith cannot save.
