Inner Peace and Fear

His Holiness Pope Shenouda explains that the source of general fear, like the fear after an earthquake, is the loss of heart peace.
He focuses that inner peace gives a person steadiness and calm in facing dangers and trials.
Causes of fear
He mentions that sin and separation from God introduced fear into the human soul, and that thinking about external causes instead of trusting God multiplies fear.
He also points to exaggeration of danger and false imaginations (such as fear of darkness or accidents) as factors that feed fear.
Its effects on soul and body
He clarifies that fear leads to disorder and anxiety, paralysis of thought and loss of ability to act correctly, and its effect may reach severe bodily impacts.
He mentions examples from earthquake incidents where panic caused many deaths more than the danger itself.
Spiritual and practical remedy
The remedy is the peace that the Lord gives, and trusting in God’s presence and help in every situation.
Prayer, reciting the Psalms, and remembering God’s promises strengthen the heart and drive out fear.
Encouragement and the fraternal duty — that the strong comfort the fearful and calm him — is important to deter panic in dangerous situations.
Biblical and spiritual examples
He presents many examples: David who exalted his heart by God’s presence, Christ’s words: “Do not be afraid,” and God’s ways with Moses and Joshua which confirm that the Lord leads and gives solutions.
He cites the lives of the fathers and martyrs who lived without fear because God’s peace was in their hearts.
Conclusion
What is required is that the heart be strong and feel God’s presence; then fear will not dominate.
A call to live the peace of the spirit as a fruit of the Holy Spirit: love, joy and peace, and to apply that by prayer and repeating Psalms of trust.
