The Three Persons of the Trinity
His Holiness Pope Shenouda explains the equality of the three hypostases in the general theological attributes, while there is distinction in the properties of each hypostasis in terms of work.
Hypostatic properties and general theological attributes:
The Holy Spirit has particular properties such as being the Life-giver and the speaker of revelation, and the Son and the Father share with Him the general theological attributes like eternality, existence by necessity, and unlimited power.
The Son’s works after the redemption and ascension:
With the ascension of the Son and the completion of redemption, His works did not cease; Christ is present in the divine nature and intervenes in the hearts of people, calls to service, guides believers, sent letters to the churches through John and addressed the pastors.
The role of the Holy Spirit in the Church and the sacraments:
The Holy Spirit is the one who works in the seven sacraments; He births the person in baptism and chrism, gives justification, purification and sanctification, grants forgiveness in the sacrament of confession and transforms the elements in the Eucharist.
Divine cooperation in ministry to the world:
The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit cooperate in the work of salvation, care and spiritual leadership; none of the hypostases is excluded from work, rather each has his specialty and intervention.
A call to personal connection with each hypostasis:
Pope Shenouda urges the faithful to establish a personal relationship with each hypostasis—prayer to the Father, the Son and the Spirit—with mention that the Church set aside an hour of the daytime hours to beseech the Holy Spirit for increased spiritual depth.
Spiritual conclusion:
The divine work continues in the world and the Church: redemption is the main work of the Son but it was not the only one, and the Holy Spirit, the Son and the Father continue to work and guide in the life of believers.
